Usability testing

Frequently asked questions

How do I know when I need usability testing?

You might benefit from usability testing if:

  • Your website isn’t converting or performing like you’d planned.
  • Adoption of your software product or mobile app is slow.
  • The Google Play or App Store reviews for your mobile app are low.
  • You want to plan improvements to your website or application based on problems experienced by your users.
How do you find test participants?

In most cases, our clients provide us with a list of customers and/or users to connect with. If you don’t have a list, we can recruit based on a customer profile.

When should testing be conducted?

Testing can happen on prototypes and live websites and applications. For projects in the early design phase usability testing is highly recommended to reduce costly mistakes and time-consuming rework. We also recommend testing on released products in order to identify current issues, validate assumptions or test new ideas.

What does a deliverable look like?

You’ll get a detailed report that highlights what we found and the changes we recommend based on what was observed. It’s our goal to make sure the changes we recommend are clear, prioritized, and achievable. We’ll also provide you with recordings of each test session for review with your team. Contact us for a sample usability testing report.

How many participants do I need?

Actionable patterns typically reveal themselves with between 5 and 10 participants. We can start on the lower side and conduct tests with additional users if things aren’t clear.

What if we don’t have a working product?

We can conduct usability testing on everything from rough paper prototypes to live, working software. Testing early prototypes helps inform development and is a great way to save the cost associated with building something that’s difficult to use.

“We were presented with ideas and paths forward that were realistic and that our entire team is excited to implement.”
- Matt Quin, Director, Ivey Publishing
